| Program Description: |
The description of the grant program is to expose our students to the culture, diversity, and experiences central Ohio has to offer. As with most schools who struggle financially, one of the first budget cuts is field trips. While these can be seen as superfluous and unnecessary, they serve a variety of functions. The purpose of this grant would be to fund transportation costs and entrance fees associated with conducting between 2-4 school-wide field trips next school year for our roughly 1200 students. If selected, the remainder of the year would be spent having teachers explore various opportunities for our students and surveying our students about their interests. Students would write about these experiences upon completion of each trip to incorporate our goal of writing across the curriculum. |
| Impact Of Grant: |
Outside experiences for students are vital to the learning process. First and foremost they provide relevancy and real-world application to material being learned in the classroom. They also demonstrate to students that they live in a broader community where learning is continuously taking place instead of isolating learning to the walls of our high school. Finally, they inspire creativity and thinking to help students realize various fields and applications of material out in the world previously unimagined by them. There are some communities where this type of exposure would not be possible due to lack of potential experiences in close proximity to their school, but this is not the case for us in central Ohio. With such venues as COSI, the Columbus Zoo, the Ohio Theatre, the Statehouse, Columbus Art Museum, CCAD, Owens Corning, The Ohio Historical Society, and The Ohio State University among many others, we believe we can provide experiences which will improve school attendance, classroom engagement, and student performance. This can also help reinforce the concept that students do not need to leave central Ohio in order to experience or perform cutting edge practices and jobs. |
