School Name:  Village Academy
Program Name:  Extending STEM Labs to Lower School Students and Community Workshops.
District Name:  Village Academy
Program Category:  Think
Program Description:  Village Academy offers four college preparatory tracks including a Science/Math track focusing on STEM and a specialized engineering curriculum. The engineering courses include a concentration on electrical engineering, software engineering, materials engineering, photonics and holography, computer aided design, rapid prototyping, and fabrication techniques including 3D printing. Students enrolled in these programs as well as middle and upper school Robotics, Advanced Science Lab, Science Olympiad, Physics, Computer Science and Digital Logic will benefit tremendously from the grant in terms of lab equipment and materials. Upper school faculty and advanced upper school students will also then be able to host introductory engineering programs for lower school students and middle school students throughout the community with the objective of nurturing and engaging students in STEM studies through labs, hands-on experiments, and guest speakers.
Impact Of Grant:  The development of rigorous and meaningful laboratory based projects within the engineering sequence of courses as well as the general science curriculum has been limited by the quality and availability of certain key instruments which are just not affordable to the program. Although the students have been extremely resourceful in their entrepreneurial approach to labs (for example last year building their own holography lab with donated materials), additional grant funding will be an invaluable asset to the program engaged in developing science leaders of the future. Village Academy is a non-profit, independent, college preparatory program which has experienced 100% college acceptance. the 23 graduates in the class of 2012 received 2.6 million dollars in scholarship offers.
