School Name:  Waverly High School
Program Name:  Waverly Athletic Fieldhouse
District Name:  Waverly City Schools
Program Category:  Shine
Program Description:  Spanning the past sixty years Waverly Schools have held events on the athletic facility at Raidiger Field. Waverly City School District serves over 2,000 students nestled in the southeastern Ohio Appalachian region of Northern Pike County. On SR 23, the facility is one of the first sights as you enter Waverly's northern boundary. The schools hold a long-standing tradition of academic and athletic excellence. Raidiger Field is the site for cheerleading and football events from the community youth program through varsity contests. The Waverly Marching Band has established a rich tradition with performances at the site as well. Raidiger Field is also the location for tennis, soccer, track and field for the junior and senior high school events. The facility also hosts numerous service events such as Relay For Life, Scott Porter Memorial Run/Walk, and Jingle Bell Parade as well as Ohio High School Athletic Association playoff/tournament events. Members of the community use the outdoor track for walking or running. However, due to required construction there has been no formal locker room, public restroom, or concession area for events since 2004. Athletes have been utilizing a make-shift locker room in an adjacent gymnasium and storage building, and portable restrooms have been provided for guests. An athletic facility committee was formed several years ago and a plan for improvement was established. The walls and roof of the structure for the Athletic Fieldhouse has been completed.
Impact Of Grant:  This grant would provide support for completion of the Waverly Athletic Fieldhouse. The required support necessary to complete the facility would allow students participating in extra-curricular activities to have a locker room area and public restrooms would be available for guests of the events. The current economic situation is challenging, and even more so in Pike County, which hosts the state’s highest unemployment rate. The community of Waverly has established a great tradition of support for the schools and the current athletic facility project illustrates this support. Waverly High School students scored above the national average on the ACT in 2012 and the class of 2014 boasted the highest achievement levels in school history on the Ohio Graduation Test last spring. In the past four years students and teams at Waverly High School have added state, regional, and district titles to the history of achievement that is our tradition. The impact of this grant would support the adage that “Tiger Pride is community wide.”
